DESCRIPTION OF AGATE
Mineral: Chalcedony
Color: White to grey, light blue, orange to red, black
Hardness: 6.5 - 7.5
Specific Gravity: 2.6 – 2.64
Agate is hard stone dominated by chalcedony with bands of different colors and inclusions of other minerals. Usually agates are found in all colors of the rainbow, although green and blue are quite rare.
The bulk of agates is associated with volcanic rocks: no accident they are often called "the petrified tears of Pluto" - the Lord of the burning volcanic mountains. They are related to a greater extent with the basalt, less with andesites and rhyolites Usually small quartz crystals form within the stone and add to the beauty and originality of individual stones.
These crystals are known as “drusy” or “druzy”. Lapidaries often cut just the drusy from an agate and jewelers use these drusy cabochons as the main stone or as an accent stone in their jewelry designs. This gem has a high decorative and artistic quality, excellent polishability. There are several varieties of its name: eye agate, moss agate and plume agate, which looks like it's filled with beautiful feather plumes.
This mineral is a relatively inexpensive semi-precious stone except for several varieties with unusual banded or scenic markings. Nowadays agate is widely used in jewelry and well cut stones with nicely defined patterns usually exceed the price of the more well known gems.
Plume agate is another that could bring high dollar. Agate is the official symbol of five (!) North American states - Montana (with sapphire), Nebraska (steppe agate), Minnesota (Lake Superior agate), South Dakota (fire agate), and Oregon. Agate is found all over the world including: Russia, India, Africa, Brazil, Asia, Egypt, Germany, Nepal, Italy, Mexico and the USA.
