How semi-precious stones make for precious gifts

It doesn’t take someone from the gift shop industry to know that people are fond of gifts, whether they are on the giving or receiving end.  Historical accounts and folklore teem with stories of gifts being given for one reason or another.  Throughout history, gifts—various items made of or embellished with semi-precious stones, handmade jewellery, or even candlesticks—have quelled wars, bridged warring groups, or simply served as tokens of appreciation.  For all of these and perhaps many other reasons, the tradition of gift giving continues to thrive, and looks to be so for the foreseeable future.

Just how fond are people of gifts?  Well, the gift shop industry is an economy on its own throughout the world.  Sure, the odd handful of holidays throughout the year is enough to make sure those jewellery boxes and vases fly off the shelves every quarter, fiscal year after fiscal year.  However, imagine all the birthdays being celebrated daily, not to mention all the anniversaries, debuts, send-offs, house warming, and all manner of parties for every little occasion and it comes into light that more than a few gift shops and retail outlets are making some nice coin.  It also brings into mind how tough it is to come up with gift ideas that the recipient will treasure and remember.

In this digital age, it can be easy to get lost in the seasonal gadget hoopla and buy into the hype of shiny new computers and music players.  Other times it may be enticing to just cop out of all the planning and go the easy way by purchasing clothes or footwear for loved ones.  While these two sets of gift ideas may indeed scream pricey—indeed, at times too pricey—they don’t evoke originality.  Who wants to be seen with an item than a dozen other people are flaunting for the season?  And getting someone a run-of-the-mill, mass-produced gift item certainly does not suggest thoughtfulness.

But what evokes that sense of uniqueness?  A lot of things, and handmade jewellery is a start.  Getting someone an earring, bracelet, or necklace set with their birthstone or a semi-precious stone that compliments their features goes a long way in being thoughtful.  This also assures that the gift says a lot about both the giver and the recipient.  Of course, one needs some place to keep their jewellery, and  jewellery boxes that feature a gamut of semi-precious stones is another good follow-up gift.  These gifts evoke that sense of luxury only handmade jewellery and accessories can afford, and without the bank-breaking price tag!  They will certainly last a couple of decades at least, and possibly even more if taken good care of.  Thus, more bang for the buck as a good set handmade jewellery and jewellery boxes set with semi-precious stones can be passed on to children and makes for a good family heirloom.

There are probably millions of gift shops offering a wide range of products for every taste, but keep in mind that gift giving, while needing a touch of luxury, should never be about the price tag.  Instead, the gifts should offer a lasting memory and a sense of value, both to the giver and the recipient.
